Description
Bourbon Chicken is a sweet and savory glazed chicken dish inspired by Cajun and Chinese-American flavors, cooked in a rich sauce made with soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and a splash of bourbon.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1/3 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup bourbon whiskey
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
Instructions
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the chicken pieces and cook for 5–7 minutes until browned and cooked through.
- Add the minced garlic and grated ginger and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Stir in soy sauce, brown sugar, bourbon, chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, and red pepper flakes.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 8–10 minutes, allowing the sauce to reduce slightly.
- In a small bowl mix cornstarch with water to make a slurry.
- Stir the slurry into the sauce and cook for another 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the chicken.
- Remove from heat and garnish with sliced green onions.
- Serve hot over steamed rice.
Notes
- You can substitute apple juice for bourbon if you prefer a non-alcoholic version.
- Chicken thighs are preferred for juiciness, but chicken breast can also be used.
- Adjust red pepper flakes to control the spice level.
- Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
