Description

Bourbon Chicken is a sweet and savory glazed chicken dish inspired by Cajun and Chinese-American flavors, cooked in a rich sauce made with soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and a splash of bourbon.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup bourbon whiskey
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the chicken pieces and cook for 5–7 minutes until browned and cooked through.
  3. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Stir in soy sauce, brown sugar, bourbon, chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, and red pepper flakes.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 8–10 minutes, allowing the sauce to reduce slightly.
  6. In a small bowl mix cornstarch with water to make a slurry.
  7. Stir the slurry into the sauce and cook for another 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the chicken.
  8. Remove from heat and garnish with sliced green onions.
  9. Serve hot over steamed rice.

Notes

  • You can substitute apple juice for bourbon if you prefer a non-alcoholic version.
  • Chicken thighs are preferred for juiciness, but chicken breast can also be used.
  • Adjust red pepper flakes to control the spice level.
  • Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
