Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions is a flavorful stir-fry featuring tender strips of beef cooked with crisp bell peppers and sweet onions in a rich, savory soy-based sauce. Served hot and sizzling, it’s a restaurant-style dish that’s quick, easy, and full of bold Asian flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
- 1/4 cup beef broth
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp black pepper (freshly ground)
- 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (slurry)
- Sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine sliced beef with 2 tbsp soy sauce, oyster sauce, 1 tbsp cornstarch, and sesame oil. Mix well and let marinate for 15–20 minutes.
- In a large skillet or wok, heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil over high heat. Add marinated beef and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until browned. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- Add the remaining 1 tbsp oil to the pan. Add onions, bell peppers, garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes until vegetables are slightly tender but still crisp.
- Return the beef to the pan and toss to combine with vegetables.
- In a small bowl, whisk together beef broth, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and black pepper. Pour sauce into the pan.
- Bring to a simmer and stir in cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce. Cook for another 1–2 minutes until glossy and sizzling.
- Serve immediately over steamed white rice or noodles, garnished with sesame seeds and green onions.

- For authentic flavor, use a very hot wok and cook quickly to keep vegetables crisp.
