Description
Crème Brûlée French Toast is a rich and indulgent breakfast dish featuring thick brioche slices soaked in a creamy custard, baked until golden, and topped with a caramelized sugar crust.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf brioche or challah bread, sliced 1-inch thick
- 5 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups heavy cream (or milk)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2–3 tbsp white sugar (for brûlée topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt butter with brown sugar to create a caramel base. Pour into the bottom of the baking dish.
- In a bowl, whisk eggs, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon (if using), and salt.
- Arrange bread slices in the dish and pour custard mixture evenly over them. Let soak for 10 minutes or refrigerate overnight for deeper flavor.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the custard is set and the top is lightly golden.
- Remove from oven and sprinkle the tops with white sugar. Using a kitchen torch, caramelize the sugar until crisp, or broil for 1–2 minutes.
- Serve warm with berries or maple syrup.
Notes
- Overnight soaking creates a richer flavor and softer texture.
- Use thick bread slices to prevent sogginess.
- A kitchen torch gives the best brûlée crust, but broiling works too.
