Description

Crème Brûlée French Toast is a rich and indulgent breakfast dish featuring thick brioche slices soaked in a creamy custard, baked until golden, and topped with a caramelized sugar crust.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread, sliced 1-inch thick
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream (or milk)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 23 tbsp white sugar (for brûlée topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter with brown sugar to create a caramel base. Pour into the bottom of the baking dish.
  3. In a bowl, whisk eggs, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon (if using), and salt.
  4. Arrange bread slices in the dish and pour custard mixture evenly over them. Let soak for 10 minutes or refrigerate overnight for deeper flavor.
  5. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the custard is set and the top is lightly golden.
  6. Remove from oven and sprinkle the tops with white sugar. Using a kitchen torch, caramelize the sugar until crisp, or broil for 1–2 minutes.
  7. Serve warm with berries or maple syrup.

Notes

  • Overnight soaking creates a richer flavor and softer texture.
  • Use thick bread slices to prevent sogginess.
  • A kitchen torch gives the best brûlée crust, but broiling works too.
