Description

French Onion Chicken Bake is a comforting oven-baked dish made with tender chicken breasts, caramelized onions, rich beef broth, and melted cheese, inspired by classic French onion soup flavors.


Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring often, until deeply caramelized.
  3. Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 3–5 minutes.
  4. Place chicken breasts in a lightly greased baking dish and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  5. Pour the onion and broth mixture evenly over the chicken.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  7. Remove foil, sprinkle Gruyère and Parmesan cheese over the chicken, and return to the oven.
  8. Bake uncovered for an additional 10–15 minutes, until cheese is melted and chicken is cooked through.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve hot.

Notes

  • Slice onions thinly for best caramelization.
  • Gruyère provides the most authentic French onion flavor, but Swiss or mozzarella can be substituted.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.
