Description
French Onion Chicken Bake is a comforting oven-baked dish made with tender chicken breasts, caramelized onions, rich beef broth, and melted cheese, inspired by classic French onion soup flavors.
Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring often, until deeply caramelized.
- Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 3–5 minutes.
- Place chicken breasts in a lightly greased baking dish and season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Pour the onion and broth mixture evenly over the chicken.
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove foil, sprinkle Gruyère and Parmesan cheese over the chicken, and return to the oven.
- Bake uncovered for an additional 10–15 minutes, until cheese is melted and chicken is cooked through.
- Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve hot.
Notes
- Slice onions thinly for best caramelization.
- Gruyère provides the most authentic French onion flavor, but Swiss or mozzarella can be substituted.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.
