Description

A comforting and creamy potato bake infused with caramelized onions, rich French onion flavor, and a cheesy golden topping — the perfect side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
  • 1 cup (240ml) milk
  • 1 packet (1 oz/30g) French onion soup mix
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup (50g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook slowly, stirring often, for 10–12 minutes until golden and caramelized. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together heavy cream, milk, and French onion soup mix until well combined.
  4. Arrange half of the potato slices in the prepared dish. Pour half of the cream mixture over them and top with half of the caramelized onions and a sprinkle of both cheeses.
  5. Repeat with remaining potatoes, cream mixture, onions, and cheese, finishing with a cheese layer on top.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20–25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  7. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline for evenly sliced potatoes to ensure even cooking.
  • Add cooked bacon or ham for a heartier version.
  • Pairs perfectly with roast chicken, steak, or grilled vegetables.
