Description

German Apfelstrudel (Apple Strudel) is a classic European dessert featuring thin, flaky pastry wrapped around a spiced apple filling with raisins and nuts, baked until golden and aromatic.

Ingredients

  • 6 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or almonds
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 10 sheets phyllo dough
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, raisins, and nuts.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a pan and toast breadcrumbs until golden; mix into apple filling.
  4. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush lightly with melted butter. Repeat layering with remaining sheets.
  5. Spread apple mixture evenly along one long edge of the dough.
  6. Carefully roll the dough over the filling, tucking in the sides to form a log.
  7. Place seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Brush the top generously with melted butter.
  9. Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
  10. Cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar, slice, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Granny Smith apples work best for balanced sweetness and tartness.
  • Keep phyllo dough covered with a damp towel while working to prevent drying.
  • Traditionally served with vanilla sauce or whipped cream.
