Description

A simple and flavorful onion boil featuring whole sweet onions steamed in foil with butter and seasonings until tender and caramelized—perfect as a side dish or campfire favorite.


Ingredients

  • 4 large sweet onions
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Optional: fresh parsley or chives for garnish


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven or grill to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel onions and cut a deep cross into the top of each onion, stopping before the bottom.
  3. Place each onion on a large sheet of foil.
  4. Insert 1 tablespoon of butter into the center of each onion.
  5. Sprinkle garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper over onions.
  6. Wrap onions tightly in foil.
  7. Bake or grill for 45–60 minutes until onions are very tender.
  8. Carefully unwrap, garnish if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Foil packets can also be cooked over a campfire.
  • Add shredded cheese or a splash of broth for variation.
  • Serve alongside grilled meats or vegetables.
