Description

Crispy Tofu Squares are a delicious and versatile plant-based dish featuring golden-brown tofu cubes coated in a savory soy-garlic glaze. Perfect as an appetizer, protein topping for salads or rice bowls, or a healthy snack, these tofu squares are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.


Ingredients

  • 14 oz (400g) firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (or sesame oil for flavor)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup or honey
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional for glaze)
  • 1 tbsp chopped green onions or sesame seeds (for garnish)


Instructions

  1. Drain and press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture. Cut into 1-inch squares or cubes.
  2. In a bowl, toss tofu with cornstarch, salt, and pepper until evenly coated.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add tofu pieces and cook for 3–4 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Remove from pan and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup, and chili flakes. Simmer for 1 minute to thicken slightly.
  6. Return the tofu to the pan and toss gently until evenly coated in the sauce.
  7. Drizzle with sesame oil (if using) and remove from heat.
  8. Garnish with chopped green onions or sesame seeds before serving.
  9. Serve warm over steamed rice, noodles, or as a side dish.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, air fry the tofu squares at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Use tamari for a gluten-free version.
  • Make it spicy by adding a bit of sriracha or gochujang to the glaze.
