Description
Crispy Tofu Squares are a delicious and versatile plant-based dish featuring golden-brown tofu cubes coated in a savory soy-garlic glaze. Perfect as an appetizer, protein topping for salads or rice bowls, or a healthy snack, these tofu squares are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
Ingredients
- 14 oz (400g) firm or extra-firm tofu
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil (or sesame oil for flavor)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp maple syrup or honey
- 1/2 tsp chili flakes (optional)
- 1 tsp sesame oil (optional for glaze)
- 1 tbsp chopped green onions or sesame seeds (for garnish)
Instructions
- Drain and press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture. Cut into 1-inch squares or cubes.
- In a bowl, toss tofu with cornstarch, salt, and pepper until evenly coated.
- Heat vegetable oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add tofu pieces and cook for 3–4 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Remove from pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup, and chili flakes. Simmer for 1 minute to thicken slightly.
- Return the tofu to the pan and toss gently until evenly coated in the sauce.
- Drizzle with sesame oil (if using) and remove from heat.
- Garnish with chopped green onions or sesame seeds before serving.
- Serve warm over steamed rice, noodles, or as a side dish.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, air fry the tofu squares at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Use tamari for a gluten-free version.
- Make it spicy by adding a bit of sriracha or gochujang to the glaze.
